Following 10 successful years as Oaklands College primary Football Academy, St. Albans Football Academy has joined forces with Oaklands Wolves to form Oaklands Wolves (SAFA) Football Academy.

The scheme offers genuine opportunities for individuals to achieve their full potential as a footballer whilst continuing to study a broad range of courses on offer by the college.
  • Level 1 Foundation learning in Sport and Active Leisure
  • Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Sport
  • Level 3 BTEC Diploma/Extended Diploma Sport and Exercise Sciences
  • Level 3 BTEC Diploma/Extended Diploma Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness)
  • City & Guilds Multi Skills Certificate
  • Selected AS Levels and A Levels

Former professional footballer and Academy Manager Steve Castle heads up a coaching staff of FA Licensed, UEFA A and UEFA B qualified coaches who deliver 16 hours of coaching each week providing a detailed programme that incorporates The FA’s 4 Corner Model in order to develop a player’s individual Technical/Tactical, Psychological, Social and Physical needs. Individual 1 to 1 sessions are provided by way of a Performance Clock detailing every element of the player’s football requirements. A position specific pathway is created between player and coach. The Academy operates three teams based upon ability levels:
  • Elite
  • Development
  • Progression
These teams have a two way pathway depending on each individual’s needs and on their development as a player. The teams compete in the Association of Colleges League as well as entering a combined academy team in the National Premier Cup. In the 2013/2014 season our Elite team won the Category 2 League and the combined academy team won the Eastern Region of the National Premier Cup.

Medical, Video Analysis, Strength & Conditioning

The academy sports therapist is made fully aware of the players off the field medical requirements and holds weekly clinics to ensure successful rehabilitation of injuries. Students are also encouraged to attend seminars on football fitness, nutrition and sports psychology amongst others. Video analysis is provided to assist with the progression of the players. A specialist Strength & Conditioning coach provides gym-based sessions to ensure maximum fitness levels are maintained over the course of the year.

The Academy has a proven pathway for progression in to the professional game, boasting a Youth International as a former Academy graduate, as well as extensive contacts and links to professional clubs and their Academies. The links with St. Albans City Football Club, Royston Town and other semi-professional clubs have also seen numerous players play at the top end of the semi-professional, non-league pyramid.

The players are also offered the opportunity to start a career in coaching through the FA Level One and FA Level Two coaching qualifications whilst the Academic courses available have seen graduates forge a career in the football industry as strength and conditioning coaches as well as providing the support needed to go on to University and study for undergraduate degrees.
